What Are Libraries? 33 Jo Haight-Sarling, Director of Access and Technology Services, Denver Public Library, says that people are using the library virtually but also coming in to borrow books, do research, and attend programs.

But libraries are more than buildings: They are the physical and virtual information centers in our communities. Library customers can now use computers to access many library resources remotely, in many cases making a visit to the physical library building unnecessary. Library customers can search online catalogs, electronic periodical databases, and other online reference resources from home, school, or work. Their information needs are emerging as they become accustomed to the ease of finding information on the Internet.

Those determined early on to become librarians proceed straight through school, graduating from high school and college and going directly to graduate school. For most of us it is a much longer and more circuitous road—in fact, librarianship may not even be our first career choice. Some people may earn their bachelor’s degrees only to find out that there are no jobs available in their field or that they are not suited to that particular field.
