The satisfiers were classified as “motivators” and the dissatisfiers as “hygiene” factors. According to Herzberg, the satisfiers contribute very little to job dissatisfaction, and conversely, the dissatisfiers contribute very little to job satisfaction. Similarly, motivation to work is created by the satisfaction of the individual’s needs for the satisfiers and not from an elimination of the dissatisfiers. The implications of Herzberg’s theory for management accounting are twofold. First, to contribute to the motivation of employees, management accounting techniques should focus on better measurement and reporting of achievement, recognition, work, responsibility, and advancement.
